/gamemode creative is 18 characters. /gm 1 is five. That is most of the mod right there, plus the same shortcut aimed at another player and number support bolted onto vanilla /gamemode. Nothing to install on the client.

The vanilla /gamemode command also takes numbers now.
/gamemode <0-3>changes your own mode/gamemode <0-3> <player>changes another player's mode
Tab completion suggests player names, and each switch prints a confirmation.
